The Acknowledgements Section

One of the things I've tried to do during the writing of this
Grammarian novel is be mindful of who helped me along the way. Now
that I'm writing in the post-beta edits, I'm also working on an
acknowledgments section, so I can thank them all.

Beta readers are front and center, as are the editors at Write
Anything. I'm giving shout-outs to NaNoWriMo and to specific
individuals who have given encouragement along the way. Supportive
family and friends, of course, and professional colleagues will get
laurels as well.

Who else? Who do you list in your acknowledgement section?

  1. I think you've covered all the bases there.

Don't put in anyone who doesn't truly deserve to be there.

Whenever I've done them, my wife gets a mention. Parents and brothers. Anyone who collaborated on the work or editing.

    Editors and agents if relevant.

I thanked my pet gecko in The Red Book...

  2. My criterion for this is, "did the person do work which contributed to the book?".

So if family and friends did work (say, regularly making dinner when it wasn't their turn so you could get an extra hour of writing in), then yes, thank them. If they provided you with information when you were researching, or typed pages for you, or did copy editing, then yes, thank them. If they did any of the tasks you mentioned in your posts, then they get thanked too.

It sounds like you have an excellent list going.

    1. I should add: I once did 100+ hours of volunteer typing and copy-editing for a project and didn't get thanked -- ironic as I typed up the acknowledgements page by taking dictation and formatted the text for publishing. That was a long time ago, and I'm still annoyed about it. Better to thank than not.

    2. Good points. I'm trying to be inclusive - I don't want to skip some deserving person because of hair-splitting.

Thank you for leaving a comment. The staff at Landless will treat it with the same care that we would bestow on a newly hatched chick. By the way, no pressure or anything, but have you ever considered subscribing to Landless via RSS?
