3-ring binders on airplanes

I'm going to have a lot of airplane time coming up. Ideally, I'd like to use that time to continue editing my WIP novel. However, I like to edit this stage of rough draft with pen and paper (see my previous post, "A stupid (but effective) trick to improve the editing experience"). An airplane fold-down tray is WAY less than ideal for an open 3-ring binder.

Suggestions? I could fold it back on itself so it lies flat, but that makes turning pages a pain.

      But I need it to be flat, so I can write notes on the printed text and on the blank pages facing.

    I have a smaller 3-ring (2-ring?) binder, I think it's for 5x7 sheets. Can you get your hands on one? You could print your book 2-up, then cut the sheets in half & punch them to fit the binder. That would be easier to handle on a tray table. (Hint: increase the font size by 2-3 points before printing 2-up, so the result isn't too fine of fine print.)

      Hmmm. This might work. It's a problem that I've already got it printed out on normal 8.5" x 11", with lots of notes on the first few chapters; merging them together later will be irritating, but not crippling.

    Take some photo copies of the pages you want to work on ( in a clear sleeve) and leave the three ring binder at home. When you get home you can add your edits to the pages in your binder or make the corrections and then add the edited pages.
